My favorite (free) logo-creation tool is inkscape, from http://www.inkscape.org. It has a little bit of a learning curve but can produce nice results. Check out my logo in the upper-left corner of http://seclab.uiuc.edu/attested-meter for an example.

Sit on the office photocopier? OK, too 1970's.

If you want a oprofessional looking logo, that's one thing. A logo for a small business...use letters. They're easier and you can use Word Art.

making a logo with paint....hmmm. is your VA for Xplane or MS? good luck with paint. You should really use something like photoshop to do this. If you just use paint, you wont have gradients, effects, nothing too attractive. try GIMP.

there are several freeware image editors. Try using Gimpshop, it is a freeware having features similar to photoshop, therefore you can read any photoshop tutorial and apply it in Gimpshop
