For a couple of years our car power outputs have been measured in kilowats instead of hp , does anyone know why?

Kilowatts is just the standard metric unit of power (any power, not just electrical).

Why not use it?

Kilowats is a measure of electric output. Is your car electric?
Perhaps you mean Newton meters instead?

Horsepower is not a standard measurement and varies in it's value depending on application and country. Many countries have decided to use the kilowatt to define power as it is the same value throughout the world. You can find more information at:

its just simply the metric vs. standard debate. and its not just you... its a lot of europe and asia too...
