For instance, if I was making US $100,000 in NYC, how much would I have to make in Beijing to enjoy the same standard of living?

It says the cost of living is about the same in NYC and Beijing in 2006.

It doesn't quite work that way. In a way it's comparing apples and oranges.

In Asia, getting a car and having your rent paid is often part of the pay package. You also usually get paid once a month.

As for discretionary spending, everyone is different. Electronics are a lot cheaper in China, but when I lived there it was "expected" that I would eat out with others for lunch and supper a lot. It was a way of maintaining social relationships. The food in restaurants was cheaper, but some items bought at the market to eat at home were more expensive.

You may need $300,000 or only $30,000 to have the same lifestyle, no one can answer that question but you. But if you have a chance to go I highly recommend it.

With the same amount of money you could live a way better life in Beijing cause the price for almost everything is cheaper.

You could live decently with $50,000 in Beijing per year.
