A factor that is prime. That is, you cannot factor down the factor anymore (other than doing 1x the factor)

the factors of 24 are

1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24

Since you can factor down 6, 8, and 12
6 = 2x3
8 = 2x2x2
etc,,
prime factors are

1,2, and 3 (you cannot factor those down more)
