Back in the 70s and 80s there was a really good series of books written by a parapsychologist named Hans Holzer. I think they were called Haunted Houses in America. He would go to the houses with a medium and try to find out who was haunting the house and why and help them. They were great books. I think some of them are still in print. You can always try half.com. I lost all mine the last time I moved. Over the years, whenever I have been in an area where one of those houses is, I've gone and visited if it was public. Ive been in several, but never seen anything. The last time I was in one was last Christmas time.
There are also a lot of great websites. Shadowlands is awesome. Pax - C

Hmm research book stores in Savannah, Georgia. That's said to be a haunted town and it really looks like one too. It's beautiful, all constructed in old stone finish with old wondows. I went there two years ago for New Years, you should go too if you haven't. Anyway, because it's said to be haunted, they sell a lot of books in that area with true ghost stories coming from people who've lived in that town. Definitely check it out!

Haunted Heartland and Haunted America by Beth Scott and Michael Norman. Troy Taylor's Haunted Illinois is ok, but not great.

If you're talking fiction, then I can't help you, but I'd check out the "Weird [State]" (i.e. Weird Texas, Weird New Jersey, etc.) series if you want a book about real-life chilling urban legends.
