On trees, this is at least partially self-protection in a wind storm. In a very strong wind, the leaves curl into a torpedo shape so the wind will blow past them. If they retained their natural open shape in a powerful wind, the tree would more likely blow over.

A curvature of the leaves indicate difficiency in calcium, which contribute to cell wall structure.
