I own my home, small but fits my current lifestyle. Owning would mean having it paid for. If you have a mortgage the Bank holds the deed and can theoretically take it back anytime until the loan is paid for.
Yes, I do think most people live paycheck to paycheck. Not because they don't have high enough salaries but they have bad money management skills.

Yes, I have many friends whose families litterally have to schedule their lives around their paycheck. After bills and essentials (Food, basic clothing, etc) they are left with almost nothing. And it's not always even their faults. I'm lucky enough to come from a family that's not in that position, so stastics say I won't wind up in it. However, my friends will more than likely live a similar life just because they arn't as lucky as some of us. It's unfourtnate that our country is like this, what happened to equal oppertunity?

We (my husband and I) own our home, we bought the property, bulldozed the house that was originally there then sub-divided the block built one on the front block and are in the process of building the second...we are very lucky. We bought before our Australian state property market boomed and prices sky rocketed.
Not sure where you are but if you are in America then I'm not sure but here in Australia, since the boom house prices have become very high making the dream for many people to own there first home harder to achieve. Rent prices have also gone through the roof and there are alot of rental property shortages.

I own...
And about your last question... technically most people are living in poverty I think. But if you're talking about people who are living well, then now I don't think most people are one paycheck away from being homeless.

I own my home. I do think many people live from paycheck to paycheck but they are not going to be homeless.

We rent now, but as of June 14 we will be home owners!!!
I DO think that people are really close to losing what they have. They splurge on random things--getting a house that's too large for them, depending on credit cards, buying cars they don't need, etc.

I own my home...I do think that there are a lot of people who are stretched pretty thin, particularly those who bought at the top of the recent "bubble"
