if you want to be a lawyer...
you have to have an undergraduate degree (4 years).
there are hundreds of colleges and universities in the US offering undergraduate degrees. some have strong reputations for academics and others are not so prestigious, but if you attend a well-regarded school and get good grades, it will help you out later.
Then you have to apply to law school, which entails taking the LSAT. your undergrad grades and your score on the LSAT are the most important factors in getting into law school.
then, law school usually takes 3 years. when you finish, you have to take the BAR EXAM in the state where you hope to practice. The BAR EXAM covers every main point of law school, and not everyone passes. if you pass, there is usually some sort of check into your background/character, and then you are A LAWYER!!

The guy above is correct. but there is a law program that many foreign nationals take part in. It's called an LLM degree and it only takes two years instead of 3. The three year program is called a JD (Judas Doctorate). You still need an undergraduate degree.

Having this degree won't allow you to practice law in the US, but will give you a solid understanding of the US legal system to take back to your own country.

If you do the JD program, make sure you go to an ABA (American Bar Association) accredited school. If you want to practice anywhere in the US, you need to get your degree from this type of school. The other schools aren't ABA certified won't allow you practice law in this manner.
