I am unsure how to ask this question. I took a shower before bed last night. after my shower I layed down, about 30 minutes later I got up again to go to the rest room and felt an uncomfortable pain in my back. I assumed that it was because I layed on my back which is not the position I am used to sleeping in. I went back to bed. As the night progressed the pain got worse and I found it difficult to even roll over. It hurt too bad. In the morning the pain had not gotten any better and I had difficulty geting out of bed. I was unable to stand up straight and it hurt to breathe. I have not done anything strenous nor have I lifted anything heavy. About 1 1/2 hours after I got out of bed the pain subsided. The pain is still there but not as bad as it was through out the night. It is actually tolerable. I am going to go to the doctor but I would like to know if anyone has ever experienced this and what could have cause it. Like I said I have not done anything strenous. Please Help. Thanks

I assume by 'pain in my back' especially as it was sore with breathing you mean upper or middle back - if so the most likely cause of your pain is a spasm of the muscles between your ribs, some rib joint tightness plus some spinal joint disruption in the area.

This may sound bad - but it isn't. It happens a lot when you relax an area that has some tension in it. As you can't rest your rib cage (as you have to breathe all the time) when you have a warm shower and lie down and relax, you can actually irritate the ribs and the spinal joints. You move a minimal amount and suddenly the small muscles between your ribs go into spasm.

They become very sore, and again because you can't rest them, breathing will constantly irritate them. This will usually clear up by itself once you are upright and moving around gently.

You can speed up the process by using Arnica (a homeopathic that helps with muscle spasm and bruising) or just a bit of rest and some gentle walking.

If however you have had lower back pain, don't worry. It is basically the same as above, minus the ribs. The small muscles around the lower joints tighten and pain occurs.

Your lower back is used all day - bending lifting, gravity and many other activities. It can tire out and you may not experience any pain at all until you doing something minor like the shower and then relaxing in a position that is either uncomfortable or not your normal position.

Again if it is lower back it will clear by itself in a day or two. You can help by doing some gentle stretches, go for a walk, the Arnica again is great, and yes some heat. Use the heat only for 10 minutes and then off for 10 minutes, repeat this three times.

If it doesn't ease in the next day do seek help, mostly it will calm by itself. If it starts to get worse - seek help immediately.

You didn't say how old you are. I'd say if you're under 25, you should go to the doctor and get it checked out. If you're old (like me), sciatica can flare up without any known causes. Just be glad you can move around -- it can be totally debilatating.

It can be anything from a pull muscle to serious Disc bulge.
You really do not have to do anything strenuous, I just stood up from the chair and BANG, the Disc bulged.
