Large fires can create a self feeding updraft that drives oxygen into the flame, thereby making it burn hotter and hotter until all the oxygen in the area is used up. Many German civilians died in the bombing of Dresden during WWII because of this phenomenon.
In post-war popular culture it has come to mean anything that catches on quickly, as in "The book was so good it swept the nation like a firestorm".
