You said "in their prime"
Mays had a much longer career and put up better Hit and HR totals. Until the war came along DiMaggio was a remarkable talent, he was not the same player after missing 3 years to the war.
I would take DiMaggio "in his prime"
Joe DiMaggio - 1937
BA-346 OB%-410 SLG-673
HR-46 R-151 RBI-167
Joe DiMaggio - 1941
BA-381 OB%-443 SLG-671
Joe DiMaggio - Career
BA-325 OB%-398 SLG-579
Joe DiMaggio - 1936-42
BA-339 OB%-399 SLG-607
Joe DiMaggio - 1946-51
BA-304 OB%-387 SLG-540
Willie Mays - 1954
BA-345 OB%-415 SLG-667
HR-41 R-119 RBI-110
Willie Mays - Career
BA-302 OB%-386 SLG-557
"DiMaggio had a far greater supporting cast than Mays ever had" >I bet to differ, the NY then San Francisco Giants from the early 50's until the middle 60's were some of the best teams of all time. Specifically the 1954 NY Giants and the 1962 SF Giants are two of the greatest ever. Alvin Dark, Don Mueller, Johnny Antonelli, Sal Maglie, Hoyt Wilhelm, Orlando Cepeda, Felipe & Matty Alou, Willie McCovey, Jack Sanford & Juan Marichal were just some of the great players on those teams with Mays.

This is joke right,Joe Dimaggio I mean i want to be respectful, but lets look at tools not teams
Speed-Mays
Power-Mays
Throwing-Mays
Average-Equal
Fielding-Mays
I mean this isn't even close
DiMaggio isn't even a top 3 Center-fielder of all time
1.Mays
2.Griffey
3.Mantle
DiMaggio played in an Era not his fault of No travel past St Louis
And no African-American or Latino players
Like DiMaggio,Mays lost 2 years to Military service that means 70-100 more home-runs which would have put him past Ruth.
DiMaggio great player Mays is the greatest player who has ever stepped on the Baseball Field

I'd never want to take anything away from DiMaggio, but he had a far greater supporting cast than Mays ever had. The stronger a line-up is around you, the better pitches you'll see to hit. Willie Mays never had that kind of protection and was still able to have a stellar career at the plate and also included a phenomenal glove in the field and a rocket arm. It's really a toss-up. They're two of the greatest players ever, but given the choice I'd go with Willie Mays.

I'd have to go with Mays because he could run the bases better. Mays had 338 stolen bases in his career versus DiMaggio's 30. Of course DiMaggio lost 3 years of his career because of WWII, and he was just as good when he came back as when he left, but I think Mays' numbers are more impressive (longer career, more homeruns, stolen bases, Gold Gloves, MVP awards). But DiMaggio was pretty dang good, too!

Joe D.when stats broken down to 167 game season leads mays in every offensive category save home runs per season and then mays leads by only 2 year take away mays sacrifice flies which were a time at bat when Joe played and Mays was not a lifetime 300 hitter

In this little fantasy, give me Joltin' Joe, although Mays was better by the numbers. Mays was great, but DiMaggio was a winner in every sense of the word.

Tough question. I will have to take Joe DiMaggio because of his ability to lead his team and he was also a great otufielder as well. He would have won his share of gold gloves had the award been around. Joe retire in 1951. MLB didn't start giving out gold gloves until1957.
Joe was as solid and as clutch as they come.
