and find the symbol you want from there

Many symbols are available from the unicode Character Map. click [ start ] [ programs ] [ accessories ] [ system tools ] [ character map ]
If you use it often enough it remains on your start menu.

You can use "sqrt()" for that.
or if you are using microsoft word, select "insert" and then "object", finally select "microsoft equation", you'll see that it is very easy to use.
