If you're going to have just 512 MB of RAM, then get XP. If you want to go with Vista, at the minimum you'll want 1 GB of RAM, 2 GB would be better in the long term with Vista. Either one will be fine. I run Vista Business on my PC and I run Vista Ultimate virtually on my MacBook Pro. RAM is pretty cheap these days as well if you want to upgrade it if you check online.

I am assuming that you want to stay with Windows of some sort. You have a deuce mixture here. XP is FAR more stable than is Vista. Microsoft also recommends a MINIMUM of 512MB RAM to operate Vista properly. Vista is a memory hog, and I'm not sure that you will be pleased with its performance, given the system you are buying.

To the bad news. Microsoft is far less than pleased with the sales volumes on Vista, and is no longer offering the option of choosing Vista or XP on OEM products. Additionally, there are rumors that Microsoft is planning to abruptly end support for XP, as a means of shoving more customers to opt for and purchase Vista.

Take it for what it's worth, and good luck.

Windows XP for sure.
Windows Vista is new and hackers are trying to hack all programs that is part of Vista.
Do not get Vista yet. Too many virus may happen because it is a new program.
Get XP for now.

I have several friends with Vista and they are having problems. I would go with XP and give them time to work out the bugs on Vista.

For pictures, Mac OS X is far superior to any Microsoft offering. Vista is a steaming pile of dung, and XP is a malware infested heap - but still better than Vista!

You simply CANNOT run Vista with 512 ram. MS. says min 1Gb but you actually need 2Gb. So XP for your HP.

Why don't you take a look a Dell laptops?? Better price/quality deal imho.

Neither. Get a Mac. The PC will cave in after a while and they pick up viruses from all over the place. The Mac is more expensive, but it's much cooler and you won't regret buying it.
