Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and is commonly referred to as the Red Planet. The rocks, soil and sky have a red or pink hue. The distinct red color was observed by stargazers throughout history. It was given its name by the Romans in honor of their god of war.

Mars was once thought to be inhabited because the writings of an Italian astronomer were mistranslated! He had a very good telescope for the time and reported that he saw 'canales' which means 'grooves' but Americans read 'canals' which implies a building project, presumably undertaken by intelligent, industrious Martians. "Martian fever" swept the U.S. and inspired Edgar Rice Burroughs to write an excellent science fiction series called "John Carter: Warlord of Mars" and also for Ray Bradbury to write "The Martian Chronicles". I highly recommend both of these literary masterpieces.
