Personally, I don't find him any more heroic than any other character. It's probably because he defied social custom and defended a black man in a court case because he believed in what was right, as compared to being afraid of defending him and being safe.

I loved the book To Kill a Mockingbird, I have read it several times and I made my sons read it too. One of my favorite all times lines is Scout's "Pass the damn ham."
I do think Atticus Finch was a hero. In those days black people got very little respect and Atticus defended Tom and really, really cared about him. He did his best to win the trial. The black community respected him, I was never more moved by a movie scene than when they all stood up in the balcony of city hall and the man told Scout to stand because her father was passing. Another part of the book that moved me was when Atticus shot the rabid dog, Jem got a whole new picture of his dad when he found out he was the best shot in the county. Jem told the man who asked Atticus to shoot the dog not to have Atticus shoot him because he wasn't a good shot. Then it only took one shot to kill him. I loved To Kill a Mockingbird. It was the only book Harper Lee wrote. Atticus was full of wisdom and good sense; kind and intelligent in a quiet sort of way.
Atticus' explanation to Scout when the man left a sack of vegetables on his doorstep because he didn't have any other way to pay him for his legal services and he was too proud to give them to him face to face.
There are many many examples in this wonderful book. It's one of the best books ever written in my opinion.

He lived according to his convictions even when he was reviled for it. He defended a black man who was falsely accused of raping a white woman, even though few in his town thought it was worthwhile, and some behaved hatefully to him. He remained courteous to all throughout the controversy, even those he knew to be lying. He never seemed perturbed.
He saw the good in everybody, even those who had bad qualities too, and treated everybody correctly to the best of his ability.

Maybe because he symbolizes values that we think are important in modern society. Qualities like integrity, determination, tolerance etc... There's a good film version of the book.

He did what was right and just. Atticus even taught his kids to always do what is right and to question authority
