Why not just throw it out once it gets that way?

I've found that throwing the sponge in with the hot laundry and bleach helps with that. And make sure your sponge has a chance to dry thoroughly between uses.

At this point, you might be better off getting a new sponge.

Good luck!

Each time I run a load of dishes through the dishwasher, I put the sponges in a run them, too. The hot water and detergent clean them. Also, I store the sponges on a rack that lets air flow through so they don't get mildewey and I don't keep them for more than a few weeks before throwing them away.

make sure after you use a sponge put it outside to dry as leaving it hanging around the sink locks in the moisture and gives the mould smell, you can use a couple of drops of lemongrass oil after you rinse it out to keep it nice, and any citrus handwash will get rid of mould smell on your hands.
sponges should be replaced often as germs can build up easily then you wipe a bench and spread it around, if you have had the sponge for longer than a week throw it out.

I always spray my sponges with Clorox Cleanup after I'm done using them. I've also thrown them in the dishwasher. Sponges are inexpensive so I usually don't use them more than a week or two without replacing them. That funky smell they get is bacteria and mold! Eeewwwww!

I stopped using sponges for that very reason. I now use paper towels and when I do dishes, I use palmolive dish wipes! No more stinky sponges here!

I put a few drops of Clorox in really hot water and let my sponges soak.

put some bleach into some water and soak the sponge. Kills all mould and mildew spores.

you should be microwaving it once a day after or before you do dishes.. that kills bacteria, which can make it smell. Also, you can spray with a bleach/water solution.

Set them in a large clean container with clean water and a cap-full of bleach.
