Humans have owned slaves as property since the beginning of time. The strong have always exploited the weak. It's the basest human nature to hold another human as property. As we evolve as humans through the centuries we (hopefully) evolve in our thinking and treatment of other humans, animals, plant life and the rest of our environment. Unfortunately, not everyone evolves at the same rate. Many people are still dense, dull, ignorant and stupid.

As far as the specific answer to your question? Go to a library and do your research for your homework honestly. Then you will really learn something and it may lead you to an area of interest you didn't know you had.

The entire southern economy hinged on the labor of slaves... That is why the south would not release all their slaves in one day or one year. They had a plan to free them over a number of years... There where few political reasons because slaves could not vote...

They were too lazy to do the work themselves, or too cheap to pay someone to do it.
