Make sure that it has UVA and UVB. They don't need a hiding spot. You also need a land and water thermometer to monitor the temps. The land needs to be between 85 and 90 degreese F and the water needs to be between 70 and 80 F.

Red-ear slider, right?
All fo this info has been in other answers we have given you, but...
Tank- the bigger the better. I'd do at least a 35gallon to start with.
Land- a simple dock, ramp, or log is OK- one that suctions or hangs on the side.
Pebbles- pea-size natural color is good, but you only need pebbles for decoration. you can leave them out if desired.
Hiding place- that is what the water is for.
Filter- this will cost the most. Aim for the biggest you can afford, the bigger the better. This way, as the turtle grows adn you get bigger tnaks, you won't have to buy this again.
UVB Lamp- Make sure it is a UVB or it does not help. A timer is nice so it turns on and off automatically.
You will also want...
- Cleaning siphon to suck off the stuff on the rocks, etc. Even with a good filter, you'll want to suck out about 1/4th of the water every week or so, and sucking it off the bottom helps the most.
- Basking light to heat and light the basking spot to about 90F.
- Water heater to keep the tank between 75-80F during the day. (Lamps just won't do it if it is cooler in the room.)
Again, good info at

I'd add you need to know for yourself how big the turtle gets. Red ear sliders are pretty common, they get to the size of a dinner plate and eventually need a 72 gallon tank. And yet, at the pet store an employee was trying to sell one saying "it won't get much bigger than it is now" (it was the size of a quater, just a baby -_- oy)
Box turtles dont get too big, and they're pretty cute. Good luck with it! And remember, they live a really long time so make sure your parents like it in case you go to college and live in a dorm, heh.

sounds good....but get an extra large filter because they are dirty little guys!! I also have a "rock/water vacuum" (ask about them at the pet store) to clean the water and change it at least every other day. A lot of work but worth it!
