I was wondering about how to cycle a 10 gallon tank. I'm not totally clueless, I know the water has to be tested for Ammonia, ph, hardness, alkalinity, nitrate, and nitrate levels I want my fish at, only introduce a few, like 3 fish of a hardy species after at least two weeks of running the tank, wait awhile, then slowly add more until you reach maximum capacity, 1'' per gallon of full grown size. I just don't remember how long, in days, do I wait to purchase fish, test water, and add more fish? Also, what are some good starter plants for this tank that are easy to care for? I want to have a beautiful tank, so what would be good fish to put with plants. I was thinking female bettas and some cories or dwarf gouramis or paradise fish. Thanks in Advance.

first buy two fish then the next week get one and then the week after that get one more and so one and so forth.

test the water weekly for about two months then it should be stable

some good starter plants are any type of swords, horn-wort and my favorite two, onion plants and banana plants. Also the onion plant is NOT the same as the thing you grow in your backyard....

Also the fish you suggested are great and beautiful but i recommend that you go with something a little more hardy like dannios, or most kinds of tetras and others

Also email me if you need anymore help

OK, I have set up many tanks. I currently have a 55gal salt water tank that I am almost done converting to fresh water, this by the way, most fish people say can not be done. You want a real nice tank, try starting as a salt tank and do as I and slowly convert to fresh. It is allot simpler then you think and sounds. I would be more then happy to explain in detail if you e-mail me, that is if you are interested in having the most unique tank in town. Other wise, stick to tetra's and neon's, they are simple and pretty.
Good luck.

I have a 10 gallon tank as well. I use fake plants and my fish are happy with it.

To cycle, try using a Whisper filter. They always work the best for me.

If this is a totally new tank, I would suggest you do fishless cycling instead, it's much faster. Here's a great link that explains it really well.

For starter plants, go for some java moss and floating plants.

Hope that helps!
