The most important thing is NOT your helmet and other safety gear.
The most important thing is NOT your riding skills.
The most important thing IS watching the car traffic on the road.

Drivers in cars are looking for other cars, not motorcycles. Even if a driver in a car happens to see you, he won't respect you.

You can wear the best helmet and leathers. You can be an expert at handling your bike. If you don't watch car traffic, you are going to get seriously hurt or killed. I tell new riders this. One of my own friends didn't listen to me. He didn't last a month. A Ford Escort changed lanes suddenly and rolled right over him. (Not a big SUV, only a little Ford Escort.) Now he has a metal plate in his shoulder. He found the best bone doctor who was able to save his arm. He could have lost his arm.

A loud exhaust system helps, too. Not straight pipes. Just something loud enuf that car drivers will realize that you are there. Car drivers are also more likely to yield to a bike that is loud. A car driver deciding to yield according to traffic laws can save your life.

If you're asking what's the most important thing to consider when riding:

1. Full face helmet with good protective gear.
2. ALWAYS make yourself visible - be creative
3. ALWAYS ride thinking about alternative paths - for when some nut cuts you off.
4. NEVER get too confident on a bike - especially one with lots-o-horespower.
5. Ride remembering that it's not IF, but WHEN you will be going down! (that helps you be really really good about the previoius 4 points, and is therefore likely the MOST IMPORTANT thing when on a motorcycle)

If you're asking what "accessory" is most important; that's a personal thing and I can't really give you an objective response. What I like best about what's "on" my bike is the gear select indicator - a little LCD screen that shows what gear I'm in. BMW's have 'em, I like 'em...helps me focus on the road.

My butt.

There are other things, and parts, that are important.
Their purpose is to keep my butt on the motorcycle, and they are useless when my butt is off the motorcycle.

Therefor.............
