You might try stories of the wild north, with Jack London stories, (some are from the south pacific scenario) James Oliver Curwood, Zane Gray (old westerns done in a clean style). Poetry by Robert Service--all the above are manly action stories, from another time and place. Man against the elements with wildlife thrown in. My teacher got all of us hooked on James Oliver Curwood from the 4th grade when she read us "Kazan, Wolf Dog", and "Baree', son of Kazan". Years later classmates and I compared notes on how those stories affected us, and we got copies of those memorable books!

Happy reading! jb

The Gospel According to Larry - Janet Tashjian

my friend read this book and she really liked it. Plotine: Seventeen-year-old Josh, a loner-philosopher who wants to make a difference in the world, tries to maintain his secret identity as the author of a web site that is receiving national attention.

Probably Still Nick Swansen - Virginia Euwer Wolff

I read it recently. I really liked it. The outline of the plot, which I'm about to give you, doesn't make it sound that great, and it also makes it sound really sad. It kind of is, but it also has humor in it. The plot: Sixteen-year-old learning-disabled Nick struggles to endure a life in which the other kids make fun of him, he has to take special classes, his date for the prom makes an excuse not to go with him, and he is haunted by the memory of his older sister who drowned while he was watching.

[just so you know, i got these plots from a website, i didnt write them.] if you choose to read these, i hope you enjoy them!!
