husband put refrigerant in one by dashboard but there is one with a black cap on the left side of car

If he bought a recharge kit, the nozzle will only fit on the right one. That will be the low pressure line. It will be bigger than the high pressure line. good luck. Have him fix the leak first , or you'll be doing the same thing next year or even later this summer.

One will be high pressure and one will be low. Never try to add to high side, the can could explode!!!
The large hose coming from the a/c compressor will always be the low pressure side, follow that till you find the valve in the large line. One good way to do it is to add freon till the large hose is cold and sweating all the way back to the compressor, if your car has no sight glass. If it does, charge till no more bubbles in the glass.

There is a high and a low side, you charge on the low side, which would have a blue cap on the valve. I would take it to an ac shop and have them help you out.
