its the easy way out... but if you really know yourself, you can pick and choose what parts of the mainstream culture you want to be a part of and what parts you don't. it doesn't have to be an all or nothing deal.

First, what are the options?? I mean, are you talking devil worship or polygamy or being a nudist or an anarchist? People are mainstream because it is comfortable and easy. If you define yourself as a Democrat, for instance, you INSTANTLY have millions of other allies who also define themselves in the same way.
