The north German princes in the Holy Roman Empire resented sending German money to Italy to build and repair Italian churches. Although Germany was weak and divided into little states inside the Holy Roman Empire there was still a feeling of German nationalism. Several of the north German princes were sympathetic with Martin Luther. It also showed itself with the building of German churches like the Cathedral at Cologne. Also the invention of the printing press made it possible to spread ideas throughout the Holy Roman Empire. The Catholic Church was losing its monopoly on education and learning. The printing press as the primary, their are plentyof others.

It allowed greater literacy and greater access to translations of the gospels. When people started actually reading the things, they began to object to the way the Catholic church was operating.
