It was inevitable, it was bound to happen sooner or later...
Miss Kitty and Sunshine finally had decided that "this town ain't big enough for the two of us" and that both of them could no longer divide and share their affection for Matt between them, and that ultimately and finally, something had to give...
one of them had to go.
This lead to a SHOWDOWN...winner take all, loser gets outta Dodge...being careful not to let the swinging doors of the Long Branch slap them on their backside on the way out.
The contest? (appropriately) Five Card Stud ...one hand.
A crowd gathered round as both ladies took their places at the table, the cards were dealt...
first card, FACE DOWN...
Miss Kitty draws the Ace of Hearts
Sunshine, the Jack of Diamonds
the second FACE UP card is dealt...
Miss Kitty....Jack of Hearts
Sunshine, King of Diamonds
the next card is dealt...FACE UP...
Miss Kitty...the King of Hearts
Sunshine, the Ten of Diamonds
the fourth card is delivered...FACE UP..
Miss Kitty...the Queen of Hearts
Sunshine, the Ace of Diamonds
Miss Kitty now holds the Jack, Queen, King, Ace of Hearts.
Sunshine, the Ten, Jack, King, and Ace of Diamonds.
Unbelievably, it all comes down to the final "Showdown" card, the fifth and finally dealt card which will determine who leaves Dodge...silence falls over the saloon...Miss Kitty and Sunshine staring down at their cards, each knowing the fate that rests on the final deal....
and the dealer deals....one final card to Miss Kitty, one last card to Sunshine...tension mounts...
The first card goes to Sunshine...it's the Queen of Diamonds!
The Card to Miss Kitty....it's the Ten of....SPADES!!
All the cards are turned face up to reveal the hands....
Sunshine WINS! a Royal Straight Flush!!
The stage pulls up in front of the Long Branch Saloon...
and Miss Kitty Russell is helped on-board...she turns and waves at the crowd, her eyes glance with a knowing surrender at Sunshine.
...and as the sun slowly sinks in the West, so does Miss Kitty Russell's heart as it rides outta Dodge on that last outbound stage.
