i have a 2001 dodge ram v8. heres the problem. i have owned this truck almost a year now. the first couple of times i cahnged the oil no prob but today and the last time this happens. when i loosen then finally remove the filter not much comes out. maybe a little more than a glass full. then when i check the stick it says there is more than enough. i added a few quarts anyway and now its way up on the stick. WHAT THE HECK? i drove the truck 7 miles then let it run a bit before opening the filter. 4 days ago the stick said to add so i put in a quart. just a quart. this is irritating. is there something i should be doing? is there another way to force the oil out? or is it no worry?

With the engine a little warm, remove the drain plug on the oil pan, let it drain , then when it has drained, loosen and remove the oil filter. Yeah, there should be about a glassfull in there. Pour an amount of new oil into the filter and wipe some more oil on the rubber gasket, reinstall the filter, and fill up the oil again with the amount needed on your truck. Usually is about 5 quarts. Check your owners manual to get the correct amount. With this done, start the engine, and look for the oil light to go out or look at the oil pressure gauge and see if you have oil pressure. Once you get pressure, go ahead and shut it off, and give it a few minutes for the oil to drain back into the pan and then check the dipstick. It should be right at the full mark. If it's a little low, give it a few more minutes and check it again. If it's a little low you can add a little more to top it off. Don't overfill it. It will cause the oil to hit the crankshaft and bubble the oil and you may lose lubrication. good luck

Make sure you are draining all the oil out. Look for oil pan take bolt out drain oil. Then put it back in. Also change oil filter. Truck probably takes 5 to 6 quarts of oil. To much oil is bad on engine also. Could blow motor up in truck

The used oil doesn't come out in the filter, it comes out of the oil pan drain plug.
Drain the oil from the oil pan drain plug then replace the plug and changed the filter then add 5 quarts and start it and shut it off and check the oil.

Make sure you are removing the bolt from the oil pan..... then if you remove it and nothing comes out stick a screwdrive through the hole, it sounds like it is clogged with sludge or something. Give it a try.
