The number of valves has more to do with fuel-air mixing than actual fuel usage. You get more power if the mix is more complete. And while automatics USED TO slip, they don't anymore. You get better milage with them because an automatic can shift more precisely than a manual can in the hands of an average driver. So go for the 16 valve engine and the auto tranny. But you might want to rethink that SUV decision. They're really more dangerous (to you) than regular cars AND trucks. If you need that many seats, how 'bout a nice station wagon?

The 16 valve, will probably use a little more, just because it is found on the better engines that are more performance based. On it's own, they should use the same amount of fuel, unless you really put your foot into the throttle, you may not notice a difference at all.

The auto's now days are pretty efficient, so again there may not be a lot of difference, depending on how you drive. good luck

ok, ready?

a 4 cylinder motor with 16 valves typically has DOHC or dual overhead cam, all this means is better flow in and out of the head and more precise valve timing and movement and better atomization(turning liquid to vapor) of the fuel because of the turbulence cause by the air rushing into the combustion chamber and having more obstacles to stir it up, the difference in mileage should actually be better because the the improved valve movement and atomization means a better burn in the combustion chamber utilizing more of the fuel that is sent into the combustion chamber instead of sending unburned fuel or hydrocarbons into the exhaust. other ways to improve mileage is to install a free flowing exhaust and intake systems to get more air through the motor you'll also get more power and better throttle response by installing those.

The mileage difference is about 2-4mpg or up to 50 miles per tank or a couple more dollars per tank.
Bottom line...If you are concerned with mileage, stay with the 4 cylinder but get the 16 valves. It's nice to have the power if you need it and it's all the same when at cruising speed.
