I wasnt sure if they are the same thing, it seems like they are, but they are specified different on the Microsoft website and on my start menu. Does anyone know why?

There really is no difference. It was renamed a while ago.
The reason they changed the name to Microsoft Update was that Microsoft implemented the ability to update a variety of products that they have (Office, SQL Server, Visual Studio, etc...) rather than just Windows itself through the website. Note that going to http://www.windowsupdate.com still works and will take you to the Microsoft Update site.

Microsoft update is an upgraded version of Windows update. The old Windows update just used to alert and download Windows patches and fixes, with Microsoft update any microsoft programs that are installed are scanned for updates.

Windows update is when there are programs within windows need to be brought up to speed with the current programs.
Microsoft update is an update to the Microsoft files within explorer.

Its not renamed, Windows update is for automatic updates that you download automatically on your computer, critical updates, microsoft is for when you update microsoft office and stuff like that or even drivers.

onace again I agree with Trevor. There is a difference in the programs they each update. Windows is for Windows Components, & Microsoft update is for.... You get the picture.

they renamed in a while back to microsoft update. no difference.
