Honorary degrees are usually granted to honor people who have accomplished a lot, and it's usually done by inviting them to give a commencement address at the school, at which time they will be given the degree. It doesn't carry any academic cred at all.

One upcoming example is former President Clinton will give the commencement address at Knox College next month, at which time he will be given an honorary degree. (The first president to get such from Knox since Lincoln, by the way.)

The first responder is correct. Honorary Degrees are just that- Honorary. They are given as a way to say "Thank you" or to "honor" a dignitary. They won't mean much on a resume, for example.

In order to get the "luxuries" as you describe: money, status, jobs, etc., one has to actually EARN the degree- all the course work, tests, thesis writing, dissertation writing, the whole sha-bang.
