Increase tax on the rich: YES. Tax the oil companies NO they will use it as an excuse to raise the price at the pump. No to legalizing all Immigrants, they take jobs away from workers and work for lower wages and when they collect Society Security and Medicare the whole shoe box will fall all at one time. We already have to many unemployed people in this country. Once you stop collecting unemployment you do not count any more. That is how the Republicans reduced the unemployment rate. Not collecting any more, no job, you do not exist any more

The upper crust should be taxed more heavily. Not wealthy people, just those who are "filthy rich", the wealthiest of the wealthy.
Immigrants should be screened and investigated, then those who are clean (or have only minor infractions) should be allowed to pay a fee and become legal residents. After 5 years, then they can apply for Citizenship (currently, a "green card" holder can apply for Citizenship after living here for 5 years. The difference I suggest is in getting the aforementioned "green card.").
Many illegal immigrants already pay taxes, and many who do, don't claim any tax returns. They use forged Social Security cards to work and taxes are deducted from their pay automatically. For fear of being caught and deported, many don't claim any returns. Make it easier for those who uphold the law (aside from the Immigration law they obviously broke) to gain legal residency. Make it even cheaper and easier for those who want to come here legally to do so - that'll help to curb the illegal immigration problem.
I came to the US legally. In my home country - at the US Embassy - it was expensive and cumbersome. Then, when I actually arrived here with proper travel documents, it was another nightmare to be admitted into the country (by road is usually more difficult than by air). The US Government's own website states that there is NO guarantee that having proper travel documents (Passport, visa, etc.) will get you into the country. That is after spending a couple hundred US dollars (impossibly expensive for most residents of developing countries) to complete an application package for a US visa and not even have any guarantee that the visa application will be approved. If denied, that money is Uncle Sam's and the applicant has nothing to show for it. My point is, if the whole process was cheaper and more streamlined, more people would be able to come here legally.
The Government could even require new immigrants to pay higher taxes for one year, the second year they are here. Let new immigrants pay normal taxes their first year to get settled in (apartment/house and car), then pay a bit more their second year to help offset the cheaper fees for applying for a visa to come here. Then, year 3, they go back to paying regular taxes like everyone else.
I'm not sure about the oil company profits. Fuel prices are already going up enough every Summer without the oil companies having another excuse to inflate prices. I would like to offer a suggestion that luxury taxes and gas-guzzler taxes be increased and be made annual, instead of only at the time of the purchase of the vehicle. I have a friend who is way north of 6 feet tall and about 350 lbs - he drives a little Toyota Matrix hatchback with a 6-speed tranny - and he fits comfortably in the car. Why do so many Americans need to have a "land yacht" to drive to and from work daily all by themselves?
With more than 60% of the world's petroleum coming from 5 Middle-Eastern countries, no American should be driving a "land yacht" (without car-pooling) post 9/11.
Tax porn and tobacco more too. Earmark some of the revenue from tobacco for cancer research and health care. Earmark some of the revenue from porn for battered women's shelters, victims of human trafficking, etc. Poetic justice. That is, besides helping to pay off the national/Federal debt.
Regarding your concerns about foreigners taking American jobs, that is happening in other ways... Fords are now built in Mexico, not by Mexicans living here, in the US. Most of the jobs immigrants take here, in the US, are either menial jobs Americans don't want, or technology jobs many Americans don't want to study for.

Sounds good, probably a better idea for paying off the deficit than what Bush and Cheney were planning...Which, from the looks of things is probably either "The old snatch and grab," or shouting "OH YEAH?! WHAT'RE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT?!" a lot.
