"They can't go forward because William is in the army and he's dedicated the next few years of his life to that, so he's not in a position to get married," Seward said.

"They had lived together when they were at university, so in a way their relationship has become more difficult. They have seen a lot less of each other and are under a huge amount of pressure."

The prince, 24, and 25-year-old Middleton met as students at St. Andrew's University in Scotland in 2001 and had been dating since 2003.

Middleton has been the focus of intense media pressure for months as rumours spread that the couple would announce their engagement. She has frequently had to dodge paparazzi on her way to work as a retail accessories buyer, in scenes that evoked the romance of William's father, Prince Charles, and the then-Lady Diana Spencer a quarter-century ago.

Why, you ask? Probably because Wills was following in his father's footsteps and turning into a Royal Poop! But she wouldn't put up with it (smart girl). Tragic for the Crown, however. Together they were the salvation of the monarchy. The people could have rallied behind them with some hope in the future. Now it just looks like more of the same: Royal Jackasses on parade.

God bless the Queen! She has given her life to the service of her people as that service was defined to her in her youth. We love her; but, when she goes, maybe it will be time to get rid of the whole bunch of them.

Perhaps this is a personal matter best answered by either Miss Middleton or Prince William. It is, after all, their lives.

Duncan Lancombe who reported on the break-up story for The Sun newspaper, said: "My understanding, from what I've been told, is that William's feeling is he's too young to get married.

"The last person on earth who's going to be pressured by newspaper columnists and television chat shows to get married is Prince William."

Separation through work commitments and the fright she got when she realised what being a part of the Royal circle meant to things like stepping outside your front door to buy a pint of milk.

It's painted that she finished with him. I think rather though it was mutual.

Apparantly he said he was too young for "all that serious stuff" and wants to be like other blokes his age (women chasing, beer-swilling, night-clubbing). I have now lost all respect for him, if that is the truth.
