They need a turtle aquarium, which is a special aquarium with a hole cut in the side for a filter to go, so that the water level can be at the proper amount. You cannot simply fill a container with water and plop it in, the turtle needs a completely dry place in the habitat to be able to come out of the water and dry out and bask under heat and UVA and UVB lights, or else it will not be able to digest its food and will develop shell rot and skeletal deformities. They eat goldfish, crickets, worms, dog food kibble, baby mice (pinkies) ,pelleted turtle food, and dark leafy greens such as romaine lettuce, bok choy and kale. You definately should have known how to care for the animal before you brought it home.

first off, like everyone else just said, you really should have done some research before u bought it. Well if i were u, id realease it, but if u wanna keep it, heres some info. firstly, Ur water level should be about 3 times the height of your turtle, maybe shallower. if it is really big like u said, u should buy a 50-60 g aquarium. u should also a basking area that can fit the turtle, a heat light, a UV light and a proper filter (canister filters works best are quite expensive. You should clean the aquarium every week or so depending on how cloudy the water is. also, wash your hands everytime you touch him, his water, or anything else in the aqaruim. you should feed him every 2nd or 3rd day. what to feed him? well, let me just say. the nice thing about turtle is that they arent to picky on what they eat. seeing as yours is probably an adult, u could feed it reptile sticks or pellets (25% of diet), Goldfish, guppies, or minnow that are apprprioate size(25% of diet) and you can also feed veggies (50% of diet) such as romaine lettuce and other dark greens, finely chopped veggies like carrots, green beans, and ocaisionally offer friuts like apples (No citrus!!). you must also put in a calcium block every time the previos one dizzolves. and remember, to own a red ear slider, you must be willing to pitch in hundreds of dollars a year.

Really big? The males get to 9", and the females to 12".

They need BIG tanks, about 10 gallons per inch. many experts feel that adults should only be kept in big outdoor ponds, but you can do it indoors in a kiddie pool, etc. if needed- but these are not real deep!

Their diet will be about 1/2 good pellets, and the rest will be a combination of meats (bugs, worms, krill, shrimp, and other 'fish foods') and dark green leafy veggies.

And just FYI- you might want to research this part before buying next time to save the surprises! ;-)

Always prepare before you buy the animal.

My sliders are kept in a large kiddy pool with an island built in the center. The heat lamp is hanging above it.

I also feed mine commercial turtle food, meal worms, worms, minnows, & crickets

I agree, you are not ready. You should do your research before buying a pet. That slider has needs beyond what can be posted on here.

I feel sorry for that turtle.

My grandma has one of those, she keeps it in a plastic container large enough so it can't climb out, and the water level is just above it's head, so it can breathe. and she feed's it turtle food from the pet store. they may not look like they can, but they climb really well.
