Before India was ruled by Great Britain it had been ruled by three different empires. First there was the Maurya Empire, which lasted 135 years. Then came the Gupta Empire which lasted for 180 years. The Gupta Empire was smaller, uniting only Northern India, but establised India as a center for art, religion, and education. Lastly, there was the Mogul Empire, which was ruled by Central Asian Muslims, and lasted 174 years. It was during this empire that Europeans began claiming ports on the western side of India. It was the fall of the Mogul Empire and the following division of India that made it possible for an outside force - Britain - to gain control.

Babar, the founder of the Mogul Empire, invaded India in 1526. His grandson Akbar is considered the greatest of the Mogul emperors. He reigned 49 years and conquered all of Northern India and Afghanistan, extending his rule as far south as the Godvari river. Akbar was a Muslim who ruled wisely and won the loyalty of Hindus by his religious tolerance.

The empire began to have troubles during the rule of Aurangzeb, who became emperor in 1658. They had already begun to suffer strong attacks by the Maratha people. Now Aurangzeb began imposing special taxes on Hindus, destroying their temples, and trying to force people to convert to Islam. Soon after Aurangzeb’s death, the empire began breaking up, enabling the British to step in as a unifying force. hope this helps.................................

India was many smaller kingdoms before the British. That's why when the British annexed it, the British monarch became Empress, or Emperor, of India. Compare it to he was only King of the United Kingdom.

There was no single overall authority - different parts of the subcontinent were under the control of various kings/sultans/emirs/etc., each of whom had differing levels of control over their own territories. Many of them continued to rule, at least nominally, under the British Empire.

Many current Indian states reflect the territories of those one-time monarchies.
