Ah, yes, you speak of the Eater of Socks...I believe his existince was researched by the mages of the Unseen University and this research was later documented in Terry Pratchett's Hogfather. The Eater of Socks has been proven to be related to the Eater of Pencils and the Thief of Towels.

i have a pile of socks that don't match and sometimes after i do laundry i'll sort the socks and find that one of the unmatching ones goes with one that magically came out of the dryer. its nice to see the friendly sock reunite. hooooray!

Perhaps. I've found, too, that if you sacrifice enough socks to the laundry gods, they reward you, on occasion, with a shirt you've never seen before.
