I'm looking for the best site to upload pictures, files, etc. and then be able to give my family a link which they could follow and then download the files/pics.
Basically the files are too large to send through most online web servers so i'm trying to find a way around this besides having to own an ftp or mailing the files everytime.

Google is a good method for this. You may use your gmail userid essentially as an online file storage device, letting your family also logon to it and fetch those pictures/files. With your gmail account, if you wish to pursue it further, you may set up such services as online picture sharing, a Google Group for your family (into which you'd install the photos), a private web page or multiple pages (into which you'd build the photos), and so on...get a gmail account, and then click into "my services" and browse around...enjoy!

Yahoo has some but I do not know how big of space they will let you have.
