At the time, America was consumed by the Cold War. The Communists (USSR/Russia) were the boogie men that crept around in the dark and scared the nation. Communism was/is the linear opposite of democracy and capitalism. People who belonged to the communist party were looked upon with distrust. McCarthy and J. Edgar Hoover, the director of the FBI at the time, managed to fan the flames of paranoia.

At that period of time, communism was feared like terrorists are feared now. Also people who werent anti-communists were labeled as communists even if they werent.

Fear. American's were very afraid of Communism coming in and taking over the U.S. and the rest of the "free world." It was an ideological and economic fear.
