A watch means the conditions are right for a tornado and it is possible for one to occur. A warning is when a funnel cloud or tornado has been spotted and repoter in that area.

You're sitting in the bleachers watching the game. Then someone warns you, "look out for that fly ball." That's the difference.

In the case of the tornado, the watchers (like on Doppler radar) see some clues that a tornado is forming; so they warn the people living in the potential pathway of that nascent funnel.

Thr problem is two-fold however. Often the watchers do not see the funnels forming soon enough to give sufficient warning. Or the capricious funnels turn sharply from their predicted direction and clobber someplace else instead.

I hope this helps,...... A "watch" is issued when conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorm formation with the possibilities of tornados. A "WARNING" is issued when a tornado is sighted or indicated by RADAR.

"Watch" means that current weather conditions indicate the possibility of a tornado. "Warning" means that a tornado or funnel cloud has been sighted visually or by a "hook" echo on Doppler radar.
