Yes, Americans are spoiled & feel entitled, and we as well as the rest of the world is going to pay for our GLUTTONY.
Oil is a finite resource - an estimated 95% has already been discovered, and we are currently at peak or post-peak production. This means as the larger, older fields dry up (the world's 4 largest are doing so right now, & they count for +15% of global production), the smaller, newer fields aren't able to replace their production levels.
Global oil consumption (demand) rises at 2% a year (the US using 25% of that, of course), while oil production (supply) is estimated to start declining an average of 2%/year. When demand begins surpassing supply, you get.... higher oil prices, which is what we've been seeing for the past couple years. As long as demand does not shrink with supply, this trend is PERMANENT.
Oil isn't just required for major transportation industries, it's also required for industrialized agriculture, plastics, chemicals, artificial textiles, pharmaceuticals, and a million other products we all take for granted. It's essentially the basis for our modern civilization as we know it. Oil is the oxygen of the economy - and we're running out of it. Or to be more accurate, since so many other economies are hungry for it, it's becoming permanently expensive. Imagine what that may do to inflation, unemployment, the stock market, and the world in general.
It's called Peak Oil. Be prepared.
The US Government Accounting Office released a report in February 2007, stating that Peak Oil is INEVITABLE, and we can only "mitigate the consequences". But of course, the oil companies, the mainstream media, & the government isn't going to educate you about this.

The only thing stopping us from living our "entitled" lives as we see fit are environmental activists like Al Gore. And I do not mean we should poison the earth at will, our air is in fact cleaner right now than it was when I was born, our water is cleaner now than it was when I was born. These are facts, much of the environmental damage done by our activity can be lessened or eliminated and reversed as we advance our technology. Witness the fact that the entire gulf of Mexico was not coated in oil after Katrina even though oil platforms were ripped right from their locations, but advances in drilling techniques make the off shore platforms of today light years above what was out there when we put in place off shore restrictions. Even the ideas environmentalists come up with as alternatives turn out many times to be false options. Take wind power for example, when added up we now have over a hundred thousand acres of windmills, they kill tens of thousands of migratory birds every year, and in return they provide little more than 2% of yearly power use if that. We could do ten times that with 1 or 2 nuclear reactors and not make hundreds of thousands of acres of decent land unusable in the process. And as you said oil supply, regardless of what some try to say,is not the issue. Let us drill offshore and within 5 years we can tell the entire middle east to take a flying leap, within a year they would be selling it to all takers at $30 a barrel. And as for mass transit and such,if we can we should, although with the people I had to deal with on a daily basis when I used US mass transit you will never see me on any city bus or train again.

I disagree NOT in principle but from fact.
The United States is NOT dependant on Middle Eastern Oil. Americas number one oil supplier is Canada, NOT any nation in the MIddle East. Most Americans don't realize that Alberta, Canada has the worlds second largest oil supply next to Saudi Arabia. The amount of oil America gets from Canada and Mexico far exceeds that of the middle East.
I think your heart is in the right place. I agree on many things. Peopel have to realize what things cost for the environment. Have faith though, there are movements towards bio-fuels, and ultimately that will make an impact I believe.

Matthew H has it right. we really dont get that much oil from the middle east.
Canada, Mexico and Venezuela are the USA's top 3 oil sources.
Rapid transit only works in close proximity metro areas, it isnt feasible in all places.

I know, if we just complain, nothing will happen. I go to Wal-Mart and use the Wal-Mart card at their gas stations to save 3 cents per gallon. Mining in Alaska would be fine, we just need to do it with precaution.
