You can be grateful if you feel gratitude toward the person who has done you a favor. Greatful is just plain wrong, unless you're talking about the band.
My spell checker indicates that the first is correct and that is how my teacher taught me to spell it.
You might point it out to your teacher, or just leave a dictionary open to the page with a sticky note on the word, she might be grateful for the education. Unless you think it might grate on her nerves.
