We are trying to spec a body built on an Ford F350 truck chassis with a diesel engine for a desert crossing. Does anyone know any negative effects (if any) on the engine if the truck's a/c is left running nightly while the engine is off. Any idea of fuel consumption for a/c with engine off.

If you are referring to the factory equipped air conditioning, that depends on the engine to be running in order to be on. The A/C compressor is operating by the spinning of the engine, so I'm not sure how you plan on running the A/C with the engine off..

Wow, where to start. You must be referring to a stand-alone air conditioning unit because obviously if the engine isn't running, the a/c compressor is not operating. If not, I wouldn't go to the desert because I don't think you would make it back. wink wink. If you ARE referring to a separate ac unit, well, the unit would have to be powered by something. A gas powered generator? That would have absolutely no effect on a diesel engine. Nor would it effect any engine unless the generator is being powered by the engine? Anything that is powered by the engine's battery(ies) is going to run down the battery if the engine in not running. If you are talking about using the a/c from the engine, it won't work because the compressor is not turning so all you would be doing is running the blower motor and running down the battery. I'm interested in understanding better what exactly it is you are trying to do. send me some more details. I can probably get you the info you are looking for. I am a little confused. Usually, the engine is the power supply for the AC. If it is off, then you will have no AC. That is why Big Rigs run their engines all night long.
Running the AC while the engine is idling will increase fuel consumption, but it will not hurt the engine.

I can only assume that you are talking about a separate air conditioner than the compressor on the engine, but if you are not then the only thing to worry about is battery drain. As far as fuel consumption goes, there are too many different makes of engines used to run separate air conditioners to say without more info!

with the engine off the fuel consumtion is 0 right? unless you are talking about a seperate engine for cooling purposes...if thats the case their should be an hour meter on it. find out from the manufacturer how many hours the engine will run with one gallion of fuel. then you can determine how many hours you can use the ac at night
The refer ac on my meat hauler 18 wheeler was real efficient . it needed refueling hardly ever. it had a 4 cylinder diesel engine made by mercedes benz

How exactly do you think the AC is going to work with the engine off?

some years in the past I took a set of three epidural steroid pictures questioning every time may be greater helpful - it wasn't. I had lots of the comparable destructive area outcomes and that they took weeks if not months to positioned on off. I want the soreness......
