Both DNA and protein:
1. have carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen
2. are important in all living cells
3. are complex molecules made of smaller molecular building blocks
4. have a structure that is long and thin

Only DNA
1. has phophorus
2. is made of nucleotides
3. is a double helix
4. directs the formation of proteins
5. is in the nucleus

Only protein
1. has sulfur
2. made of amino acids connected in a chain
3. has a folded shape
4. is made following the directions from DNA
5. is found and functions throughout the cell
6. catalyzes reactions (the enzymes), builds structures like hair or nails, transfers materials through membranes, acts as "identifiers" on the surface of the cell, carries oxygen, makes up the cytoskeleton, ...

There's a start.

DNA contains protein, but is not protein itself. It is a larger and more complex molecule than just protein. In a similar fashion, protein is not DNA, but is a component of a DNA molecule.

Nucleic acid is the active ingredient of the gene, which bears the hereditary characteristics. Nucleic acid usually occurs combined with varying amounts of protein. The combined product is called a nucleoprotein.

Nucleic acid molecules are long polymers. Each unit of a polymer is composed of a nitrogen-containing base, a sugar and a phosphate group. Protein in itself also contains nitrogen.

The base and the sugar may vary slightly from unit to unit, and it is this sequencing of differing units in the polymer that is believed to determine hereditary characteristics.

The two main types of nucleic acid are:
1.) DNA (deoxynucleic acid) - found mostly in the cell nucleus
AND

2.) RNA (ribonucleic acid) - found mostly in cytoplasm

The doubling of the amount of DNA in the nucleus precedes cell division.

DNA is composed of subunits called nucleotides. Each nucleotide is made up of a 5 carbon sugar (deoxyribose), a phosphate (PO4) and one of 4 nitrogen bases (adenine, guanine, cytosine and thymine).

Each DNA molecule has 2 strands. each strand is made up of nucleotides connected sugar to phosphate, with the nitrogen bases dangling off to the side. The two strands then join by hydrogen bonds between the nitrogen bases (adenine bonds with thymine, cytosine bonds with guanine).

Proteins are made up of subunits called amino acids. Each amino acid has a central carbon. Carbon form 4 bonds. the central carbon forms a bond with a hydrogen atom, an amine group (NH2), a carboxylic acid group (COOH) and an "R" group which varies from one amino acid to another. There are 20 different (common) amino acids. Each protein is composed of 75 or more amino acids in a chain.

DNA and protein are similar in that they are both very large molecules, both polymers (composed of repeating subunits) and the sequence of nitrogen bases in the DNA determines the sequence of amino acids in the protein.
