I'm not sure about your definition of "famous." There are the great names: Lincoln, Grant, Lee, Jackson, et al., but a measure of fame has fallen to a number of non-leaders. Sam Watkins, a Tennessee soldier, wrote "Co.Aitch," one of the finest memoirs out there. Mary Chestnut, a South Carolina lady, also was a great diarist. Johnny Clem, "Johnny Shiloh," a young boy who ran off to become a drummer boy (and retired a major general) could be an interesting study. You could include names like Dorothea Dix, who helped modernize nursing care and Walt Whitman, poet who was also a nurse, wrote much about his experiences. For a cynical picture, Ambrose Bierce wrote much as well, also plenty of fiction. The War is one of the best documented in history, and probably more books have been written about it than any other. Start with say, the American Heritage Pictorial History or similar work. Good luck!
