Well, it would depend on what you are writing about.

If it is a general essay about the place, start out with a general description of the environment. Compare the aspects of the physical geography of the country in a metaphorical sense. "The rolling hills sing of beauty and are emeralds in the backdrop."

You could introduce the country by giving something the reader can relate to. Describe a connection between the foreign country and America (if that's where you live). Here's a very false and dumb example that may help you get the idea. "Have you ever wondered where soap comes from? I bet you didn't know that America imports nearly half of it's soap products from Scandinavia!" Of course, I have no idea where America gets its soap from, but you see?

Give a unique fact about the country/region... something that most people probably don't know.

Give a fun fact, like something weird they eat over there or a surprising statistic that is striking compared to American ways of life.

As for metaphors? I don't know enough about Nordic countries to come up with one. Just stick to something simple. A teacher won't ace you just for having some deep bull**** metaphor.

It's a bleak and barren land, covered with snow and ice so much of the year, it's no wonder that Lemmings throw themselves off cliffs to escape, and the now extinct Colorful Nordic Penguin evolved into parrots and migrated to Africa.

Think everyone in Scandinavia is blond and blue-eyed? Think again! That's just a stereotype.
