You won't be able to put weight on your lower extemity if you have a fractured hip. And you can fracture your hip at any age depending on the severity of the injury. It is not peculiar to the elderly.

It is possible to fracture your hip with a fall on it but it is EXTREMELY rare unless you are elderly suffering from osteoporosis, and then it becomes fairly common. The hip joint in healthy individuals is very stable and strong and needs more force to fracture than just falling on it from your feet. If it is fractured there would be intense pain with bearing weight on that leg.
