I cannot believe all the women think a woman proposing to a man is desperate. That would be the most flattering gesture I would have ever received. All this talk of equality and yet a guy is still "supposed" to be the one to take all the social risks. I suppose we are the only gender that can handle rejection, too?

What kills me is the way feministic women want to play both sides of the fence. Why aren't men labeled desperate for popping the question? No wonder we get divorced so d@mn fast. Bring back the days when men and women had defined roles.

I think heterosexual women should definitely propose, but I think there are a few challenges facing the brave couple that dares have the woman initiate marriage. Here's the problem with women proposing: when a man says "will you marry me?" he offers a ring, and it plays a central symbolic role in the engagement process. The engagement ring is such an important symbol in our capitalistic society (American or otherwise) that in order for both man and woman to be validated within their families/friends/etc, the gift of the ring is imperative. So if a woman proposes, the man may read this as "now you gotta buy me a ring", which is massively inconvenient for obvious reasons.

Hey, it's a new age. I think it's cool for a woman to propose, but it depends on what the guy is like. My husband is sort of old fashioned, it probably never would have worked if I had popped the Q to him, but I am definitely down with a woman proposing, and there are a lot of men out there that agree. After all, we are equal.

Traditionally, the man should do the proposing but cmon now its 2007, if a woman has enough nerve to propose to a man then go for it. There is nothing wrong with it.

I think its a bad idea for a lot of reasons. The woman will appear desperate. Also, when a man is ready to marry, he should be the one to do the asking. A woman needs to be patient in ths situation.

Why not? Anyone who thinks the woman is desperate by doing so just shows that they're willing receptors to societal norms and not able to think for themselves.

Yes, why not. I proposed 32 years ago and it's worked so far.
