The speed of the airplane is d/t = s; where d is the distance travels (1250 km) in time t = 3.5 hours. But this is NOT its velocity. Velocity has direction and magnitude. Speed is a scalier and has only magnitude.

Thus, the real answer is v = s going a specified direction. Therefore, v = 1250/3.5 kph going north-east. Convention says that north-east is the same as 045 degrees true when north is 000 degrees and east is 090 degrees. So one could write v = s at 045 degrees.

right ok, the mistake here to make would to be to give your answer as speed, ie with out direction and speed is a scalar quantity, velocity on the other hand is a vector quantity, ie it must be given with direction, which the question has given you, north east, so that's easy.

working out the actual speed as a scalar quantity works like thus

speed= distance divided by time
but you would want to work it out in kmh [kilometers per hour] or in m/s meters per second I'll take the former its easy, its the distance, 1260km divided by 3.5 that's the speed in K/MH

if you want it in m/s meter's per second (better to learn conversions) then you want to do this
convert kms to metres, there is 1000 metres in a kilometer so the number is going to be greater than 1260, its going to be 1260000m and you have to get 3.5h into seconds, there are 60 minutes in an hour, so therefore, its 60 multiplied by 3.5 that gives you the number of minutes, do the same thing
again you have the seconds now you Davide the distance by time and you have your speed which is a SCALAR quantity as discussed, so lets say you have your speed you want a velocity you write this

your speed you worked out north west although I'll leave the maths to you for example that's

3.5m/s northwest that's a velocity

REMEMBER THIS, TO A VELOCITY IS A VECTOR QUANTITY, TO GET THE MARKS YOU MUST GIVE YOUR DIRECTION.

To get the KPH (killometers per hour on a distance over time), simply divide the distance by the time in hours, thusly: 1260 Km divided by 3.5 hours = 360 KPH.

v=1260km/3.5hours=360km/h
