I am sorry you had bad experience with Dell. However, they're my favorite brand and I will never change. I will once again recommend Dell to you.
With its estimated weight starting at just 5.3 lbs, the Inspiron E1405 keeps a very low profile on the road. Its 14.1-inch widescreen display is packed into a compact design, so you can comfortably use your notebook on planes, trains or anywhere space is at a premium.
Offering easy photo and video editing, access to online content providers, optional TV tuner integration, DVD playing and more, Media Center helps you turn your notebook into a complete entertainment solution. You don't even need to boot windows in order to play DVDs.
I highly recommend this notebook to you, and the price is just $699

I have an HP Compaq and wouldn't trade it for anything.
Before I bought, I called computer repair shops to see what laptops were brought in most for fixing. Acers were the biggest loosers with DELL a close second. Toshibas were the best but also cost 1500 and I couldn't afford that. My HP was 800 after taxes.

You should get an acer 5100 notebook it is fast and around $700 I have one and it works great but if you need long battery life its not so good a lenova is the new name for IBM i have not tried on. I personally don't like dell the have great desktops but not laptops. Hp is a more expensive choice but is one of the better brands.

Lenovo is an IBM laptop under another name. They're not expensive and usually reliable. You may also want to take a look at the Toshiba notebook, personally, i think they make the best laptops.

I wish I could tell you. It used to be Toshiba but that was when everyone made their own laptops. Now pretty much all laptops Dell, Compaq , most Toshiba, HP etc are made in Sinagpor, Korea, China. By companies like Lenvo, Compal, etc. They just stick there brand name on it. Like RCA equipment made in China? You might want to think about a 3 year or so warranty too.

I got one of those HP dv5200 series laptops for about 700 dollars last september and it still runs great, and I know a lot of other people with the same one. They never complain about it either. Toshibas are also a great deal and they are fancy enough. You could just walk into Circuit City or other store and ask what deals they have going on, that's what I did.
