I am not sure what you are referring to in your argument, that would lead you to say that slavery existed in this country in 1968, unless you are talking about the fact that blacks where a discriminated against and a persecuted minority. If this is what you are alluding to, I think it trivializes slavery. Granted I am not making light of being discriminated against and unjustly persecuted, but there is still quite a substantial difference between being a discriminated class and being part of a slave class.
Lets define historical categories correctly, and stop trying to conflate various historical sins. The only way to clearly learn from history is to have a clear view of history.
As far as a minority of people in Tennessee believing in slavery, so what? You will always have a fringe movement that upholds, absurd and backward ideologies. We do not fashion public policy as a response to such opinions that are not widely held.

As an Arkansan, I can tell you first hand slavery has not existed for 150 years (remember that movie about the 9 kids getting to go to high school and the national guard being called in.. yeah.. that's this state).. racism and slavery are very different things and to say otherwise is to insult your ancestors and leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. Yes, there is still racism in our world.. but even that is no where near at the level it was even just a mere 10 years ago... just look.. we have a woman and a black man running for president... and they both have a decent chance of winning! Times are changing.. and it's time for you guys to get on board.

What did Abraham Lincoln say after he woke up from being completely hammered the night before?
I FREED WHO!?!?
Slavery ended with the Emancipation Proclamation and the civil rights Amendments. 13-15. There is a difference between slavery and racism.

Probably because Slavery in America continued in a 'modern' industrialised society that should have known better. And who criticises America? At the time Washington was the Hero of every reform movement in Europe. And Lincoln had the support of European Trade Unions.

Slavery was abolished 200 years ago, meaning it became illegal then. Those people in Tennessee probably haven't been out of the redneck area in too long to realize that we're generations ahead in technology anyway. I've been to Kentucky enough times to know that, out there, some stuff just never changes.

Slavery does still exist, but it is not just a race thing, it is more a class thing. Everyone of us who live below a certain income level are slaves to the elite. The slavery may not be quite as obvious, now, but it is there just the same, and poor and working class whites are just as much slaves as poor and working class blacks. *sm*

i wish slavery was gone, but it does still exist mainly in the sex industry. young girls are sold or kidnapped from foreign countries and shipped illegaly to be forced into a life of prostitution. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/slaves/
