In order to get rid of the smell so that the dog won't even smell it (and won't go to the bathroom in that spot again) this is about the only thing that will eliminate the odor completely.
1. First, you must blot up any liquid residue using a heavy pad, paper towels or old, disposable rags. Lay this pad on the carpet and stand on it to absorb as much liquid as possible.
2. You must use an enzyme product to digest the protein, particulary in urine. Your pet store will sell this product and the ones I recommend are Outright Pet Odor Eliminator by Bramton Company and Nature's Miracle. Read the directions on the product carefully, following them exactly. Do not be afraid to really saturate the carpet. Pet accidents soak through the carpet back and into the padding , so the enzyme treatment needs to soak in just as deeply. This is very important because not putting the enzyme in deeply will not eliminate the odor. Be sure to saturate the entire area, covering the circumfrence of the stain thoroughly. Urine goes deeply into the carpet and spreads.
3. Cover the treated area with a plastic garbage bag or a dry cleaner's bag. If there is any writing on the bag don't let it touch the carpet or it will transfer to the carpet. Weight the plastic down with something heavy-the idea of this is to keep the enzyme from drying out until it can do it's job, which is digesting the protein in the urine or feces. Leave the plastic in place at least 24 hours, preferrably 48 hours. Do not take the plastic off until the 24 -48 hours are up.
4. After 24-48 hours, uncover the area and allow it to dry thoroughly. This may take a week - 10 days depending on how deeply you treated the spot. To speed drying time, you can let a fan blow across the area.
5. Once the area is completely dry (and only when it's completely dry) check for odor. If there is still odor, re-treat as directed above. If the odor is gone, clean the area with a good-quality carpet spotter that specializes in pet stains. I like Spot Shot Instant Carpet Stain Remover.

That smell is one of the hardest to remove. Remember that the pee probably went below the surface of the carpet and into the pad. As long as it is there, and you only shampoo the surface, the smell will stay there. You might try some of the preparations to remove pet urine smell that contain enzymes to counteract smell. These products should be used to saturate the area and left to counteract the smell. In other words, you have to really get it soaked in the product and let it sit. Another alternative is to replace that section of mat under the carpet and then clena the carpet again. I would also try spreading baking soda on the area which will help absorb some of the smell. It takes a long time to really get rid of the odor unless you remove all the materials that were wet by the pee. I hope that helps.

First, as soon as Fido pees, use club soda and facial tissue to sop it back up. Tissues are the most absorbent paper.....ok, you can use paper towel first, but finish with tissue.
But now that the spot is there, the enzyme cleaners from the grocery store and pet shops are your next shot. If that doesn't work, then the smell is in the mat and maybe subfloor below. Uh Oh!
Cut the spot on three sides and pull the flap back. Remove the mat underneath and replace with a piece cut from under the rug in the closet or other out of sight area. While the mat is up, check the floor below. If it stinks, now we have a problem. If it is plywood, paint it will Kilz, an encapsulating paint just for problems like this. If there is good hard wood flooring..........well, ideally you should cut out that section, replace and refinish. Me, I'd probably use Kilz and deal with the painted floor if and when I wanted the hardwood floor back. Now using carpet tape, put down the mat patch and another section of carpet tape for the carpet to go back over. Yes, you can cut a new piece of carpet from the closet to replace the peed on spot, but usually the enzyme cleaners do a good job.

It's tricky to do but it can be done. Lift the carpet up and actually cut out the section of underlay which is effected. Let the timber under that dry properly and replace the cut out section with new underlay. Then have the carpets cleaned professionally. As i said....tricky but if not done properly...the smell will only get worse. Good Luck.

Try sprinkling the spot with spirits. It sure gets rid of the smell, and disinfects it. It will take a few hours before the spirits smell goes away, but it even works for cat pee. And that stinks worse than dog´s.

Let your dog poo all over it instead. Then you won`t notice the smell of ammonia, i can guarantee it.
