No animal has a "purpose". You serve no particular purpose and neither do I. What species do is fit into a niche in an environment, and koalas do that particularly well. Very little else can live on the Eucalyptus leaves as they do. I have never been near a Koala but can you imagine what it's breath smells like? I bet it would clear your nose! All animals I find amazing, all you have to look for in each one is how it survives and how it is adapted to its environment and wonder at the marvels of the natural world.

Koalas are not bears. Their closest relatives are the wombats. They have no purpose other than to reproduce themselves - the same for every animal on the planet including us. Koalas are no more fussy with food than many other animals. They don't need bigger teeth, they can cause enough damage with the ones they have if they decide to bite - as many tourists have found to their cost.

i agree with wolfie in that the "purpose" of the Koala is a bit tricky to answer. I did find a good site that gives a very good description of its niche in the wild and its relationship to people (who are the only ones who would even consider asking an animal's purpose).
Look at www.answers.com/topic/koala. the Thomson/Gale section has a very good discussion of the Koala'.

you might think that, but the koala is actually very well adapted to his environment. Its one of the only animals that can actualy eat the leaves of the eucaliptes tree (theyre highly poisonous to any other animals). and thats what they do, eat eat eat eat eat, unaposed all day. sounds like koalas should be from america to me!
oh, and they looooook cuuuute!!!!

It provides targets for very aggresive Kangaroos. By virtue of being soft to strike, the rampant roo does not damage his tender litte paws

Their only purpose is to eat eucalyptus but it's no good for them, they have to eat loads of leaves and it leaves them ill and they die young.
